Dongguan is a vast, fast-moving manufacturing powerhouse in the heart of the Pearl River Delta, sitting midway between Guangzhou and Shenzhen in southern China's Guangdong province. Famous as one of the "world's factories," it is greener and more relaxed than its reputation suggests, with classical gardens, a lakeside tech district and a low cost of living — and, thanks to huge demand for teachers, one of the easiest places in the region to find work.
Dongguan has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, wet summers, short, mild winters and plenty of greenery. It is home to a sizeable international community, with English used in its international schools and training centres. Mandarin and Cantonese are both spoken, while a low cost of living, a growing metro and superb high-speed rail links — Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong are all close by — make it a convenient and affordable base.

Getting Around
Dongguan is large and spread out, but increasingly easy to navigate. Its growing metro links the centre to the high-speed rail stations, backed by an extensive bus network, while Didi (China's ride-hailing app) and metered taxis are cheap. Best of all, bullet trains reach Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong in around an hour. Almost everything is paid for by phone with WeChat Pay or Alipay, so it's worth setting these up soon after you arrive.
When to Go
Autumn (October to December) is the most comfortable season — warm and dry with pleasant days. Spring is mild but damp, summers (May to September) are hot, humid and rainy with the odd typhoon, and winters are short and mild rather than cold.
