Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's gleaming, multicultural capital — a city where the soaring Petronas Twin Towers rise above colonial shophouses, golden mosques, Hindu temples and some of the best street food on the planet. A melting pot of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures, it is green, modern, affordable and refreshingly easy for newcomers, with English spoken almost everywhere and a tropical jungle never far from the skyline.
Kuala Lumpur has a hot, humid tropical climate, staying warm and green all year with frequent short afternoon downpours. It is home to a large, diverse international community, and as a former British colony English is very widely spoken alongside Malay, making it one of the easiest cities in Asia to settle into. A low cost of living, excellent modern infrastructure and a central position for exploring Southeast Asia make it a hugely popular base for teachers.

Climb 272 rainbow-painted steps past a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan to a vast limestone cave temple on the city's edge — a riot of colour, monkeys and Hindu devotion.

Dive into the neon shopping-and-nightlife heart of the city, then haggle through the lanes of Chinatown's Petaling Street and the colourful Central Market.
KL Tower & the Forest Eco Park
Take in 360° views from the KL Tower, then descend into the surprising patch of ancient rainforest at its foot — canopy walkways and all — right in the city centre.
Day Trips & Beyond
KL is a perfect launchpad: the historic streets of Malacca, the cool tea hills of the Cameron Highlands and the casinos of Genting are all an easy trip away, with cheap flights across Asia from the airport.
Getting Around
Kuala Lumpur is easy and cheap to navigate. An integrated network of LRT, MRT, monorail and commuter trains covers the city, all paid with a tap-and-go Touch 'n Go card, while Grab (Southeast Asia's ride-hailing app) is everywhere and astonishingly affordable. The heat and sprawl mean most people skip long walks, but free GOKL city buses loop the centre. Most journeys cost just a ringgit or two.
When to Go
Kuala Lumpur is warm and tropical year-round, so any time works. The drier, slightly more comfortable months run from May to July and December to February, while the wetter periods bring heavier afternoon and evening downpours — rarely all day. There is no real off-season.
