Jeddah

Jeddah is the gateway to the Red Sea and the undisputed cool cousin of the Gulf. While Riyadh is all business, Jeddah is art, history, and coastline — a sprawling, energetic city where ancient coral-stone buildings sit alongside gleaming new towers, and the smell of the sea mixes with freshly brewed Arabic coffee. For international teachers, Jeddah offers a fascinating, fast-changing, and genuinely rewarding experience: serious tax-free savings, a welcoming expat community, and front-row seats to one of the most exciting transformations in the world.

What makes Jeddah special is its soul. This has always been Saudi Arabia's most cosmopolitan city — a historic trading port where pilgrims, merchants, and travellers have mingled for centuries. Locals are famously warm, curious, and generous. As a teacher, you'll be respected in a way that feels genuinely uplifting. You'll be invited to family dinners, beach weekends, and desert camping trips. You'll make lifelong friends — both Saudi and expat — in compounds, coffee shops, and classrooms. The city is safe, family-friendly, and increasingly open, with public concerts, film screenings, and art festivals becoming the norm.

The climate is what you'd expect from a coastal desert city: hot. From November to March, it's genuinely beautiful — 25–30°C, sunny, perfect for beach days, outdoor dining, and exploring the historic Al-Balad district. Summer (June–September) is fierce — 40–45°C — but everything is brilliantly air-conditioned, and the Red Sea water stays warm. Jeddah is also the launching point for diving, snorkelling, and some of the world's most stunning underwater ecosystems. Alcohol is not available to the public (zero alcohol is the law), but the social scene thrives on incredible food, shisha cafes, beach clubs, compound barbecues, and epic road trips to the Edge of the World.

International teachers & tax-free salaries
Jeddah has a booming international education sector, especially in British,American, and IB curriculum schools. Salaries are tax-free, and packages typically include housing, flights, and health insurance — meaning serious savings potential, even for new teachers.

Safety
Jeddah is exceptionally safe. Violent crime is almost nonexistent. Petty theft (pick-pocketing, phone snatching) is rare. You'll feel comfortable walking around at night, leaving bags in cars, and generally letting your guard down. For female teachers — Saudi Arabia has changed enormously, and Jeddah is one of the most comfortable Gulf cities for women living independently.

Transport
Jeddah is a driving city. There's no metro yet (though one is coming), and public buses are limited. Most teachers drive — either a school-provided car, a rental, or their own purchase. Ride-hailing apps like Uber, Careem, and Jeeny are cheap, reliable, and everywhere. A 20-minute trip costs around 20–35 SAR (approx. 9 USD).

Cost of living per month inc. rent: 5,000 – 8,000 SAR (approx. 2,100 USD)
Wait, that seems low — but many teachers have housing provided, so this figure is for those who rent privately. A one-bedroom apartment in a decent area (like Al Rawdah or Al Zahra) costs approximately 3,500–5,500 SAR per month (approx. 1,500 USD). If housing is included in your package? Your savings rate will be fantastic.

Meal for two at mid-range restaurant: 150 – 250 SAR (approx. 67 USD)
A three-course meal for two — think incredible Lebanese, Yemeni, Indian, or Filipino food. Local mandi or kabsa? Even cheaper.

A beer for one
Not available. Saudi Arabia is alcohol-free. But fresh juices, karak chai, and Saudi coffee with dates are everywhere, delicious, and cost 5–15 SAR (4 USD).

One-way bus/taxi (Uber/Careem short trip): 20 – 35 SAR (approx. 9 USD)
For a 15–20 minute ride. Longer journeys across the sprawling city might hit 50–70 SAR (19 USD).

Monthly gym membership: 300 – 600 SAR (approx. 160 USD)
Gyms are excellent, often separated into men's and women's sections (or with dedicated women-only hours). High-end gyms with pools and spas are more. Many school compounds include free or subsidised gym access.

Bottom line: Jeddahisn't for everyone — but for adventurous teachers who want tax-free savings, genuine cultural immersion, and a front-row seat to a nation transforming at breathtaking speed, it's a genuinely brilliant choice. You'll dive in the Red Sea, eat the best food of your life, make friends from six continents, and leave with a bank balance and a lifetime of stories.
