Madrid is asun-drenched, soul-filled capital that grabs you from day one and never lets go. For international teachers, it offers the perfect balance: a buzzing European city with endless career opportunities, a ridiculously fun social scene, and a cost of living that still feels fair. From the sprawling greenery of El Retiro Park to the tapas bars of La Latina, Madrid is a city that lives out loud; think late-night dinners, rooftop drinks, and the kind of spontaneous friendships that form over shared plates of patatas bravas.
What makes Madrid truly special for educators is how effortlessly you'll connect with locals. Madrileños are famously open, warm, and patient with your improving Spanish.Whether you're joining a pickup football game at Campo de la Estrella, being adopted by a colleague's friend group, or chatting with your landlady at the local mercado, you'll find yourself building lifelong friendships faster than you can say "caña, por favor." The city is incredibly safe, walkable, and well-organised; ideal whether you're moving solo or with a partner.
The climate is one of Europe's best: hot, dry summers perfect for terrace life, crisp autumns for exploring, and winters that are cold but sunny — think coats, not chaos. Spring arrives early, and by April, the whole city is out enjoying outdoor cafes. Madrid is also deeply progressive and tolerant, with a thriving LGBTQ+ scene, endless cultural festivals, and a world-class nightlife that caters to every taste.Alcohol is widely available and affordable; a glass of wine or a small beer (una caña) will set you back just a couple of euros.
International teachers & competitive salaries
Madrid has a massive, well-supported expat teaching community, especially in private and international schools. Salaries are competitive for Europe, and while not tax-free, they go a long way thanks to reasonable living costs.
Safety
Madrid is extremely safe by global standards. Petty theft (pick pocketing) happens in touristy spots, but violent crime is rare. Most teachers feel completely comfortable walking home late or using the metro at night.
Transport
The Madrid Metro is clean, fast, and legendary — one of the best in the world. A single journey costs €1.50–€2, or you can get a monthly youth/under-26 pass for just €8, and a standard monthly pass (zone A) for around €55. Buses, bikes, and scooters are everywhere too.
Cost of living per month inc. rent: €1,000 – €1,600
A one-bedroom apartment outside the city centre costs approximately €700–€1,000 per month. Inside the centre? Closer to €1,100–€1,500.
Meal for two at mid-range restaurant: €30 – €50
A three-course meal for two with wine or beer is incredibly reasonable — think€12–€15 for a menú del día at lunch.
A beer for one: €2 – €4
A caña (small beer) at a local bar costs as little as €1.50–€2. A pint in a busier area runs €3–€5.
One-way metro ticket: €1.50 – €2
Single journey on public transport. But honestly? Get the monthly pass — it pays for itself in a week.
Monthly gym membership: €30 – €50
Basic gyms like Basic-Fit start around €25–€30. Fancier spots with pools and classes go up to €50–€70.
Bottom line: Madrid isn't just a place to teach — it's a place to live properly. You'll work hard, eat well, make genuine friends, travel easily across Europe, and probably never want to leave.
